History

The MedAmerica/Galen Connection
Galen Inpatient Physician Medical Group was originally formed in April 2000 as MedAmerica Admitting Physicians (MAP), an independent hospitalist group with practice management support from MedAmerica, Inc. The group’s differentiation from others is local physician ownership supported by an experienced management company providing an array of products and services specifically focused on hospital-based physicians. Alignment of ownership with practice management support works well to ensure that patients receive timely, cost effective and high quality inpatient medical care.

This independent, democratic and physician-owned group was founded on the premise that professionals organized as joint owners can achieve far more together than they might through individual efforts. Galen hospitalists also share best practices and enjoy the collegiality of a broader network.

Galen is committed to quality clinical performance, democratic governance, and superior client-focused management services. This Galen model provides tools for physicians and hospitals to optimize results in a hospitalist practice operating in today’s complex healthcare environment.

History of Name
Claudius Galenus of Pergamum (131-201 AD), better known as Galen, was a famous Greek physician. His views dominated European medicine for over a thousand years. He was considered second only to Hippocrates in his importance to the development of medicine. He gained fame as a surgeon to the gladiators and was eventually summoned to Rome to be the physician of the Emperor. Galen spent the rest of his life at the court writing an enormous corpus of medical works (comprising nearly a hundred treatises) until his death. Galen's medical writings became the standard source of medical knowledge for centuries.
